To Whom It May Concern:

Bringing together twenty plus years of varied work experience, with currently completing a diploma in the Recreation and Leisure Program (Graduating April, 2017), and currently doing a placement at Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), I strongly feel that I am ready to be employed in the Therapeutic Recreation field.

Prior to my Recreation Therapy placement at CAMH, I volunteered at CAMH as a personal fitness trainer from 2012 to 2015. While volunteering at CAMH, this is when I discovered and fell in love with the Recreational Therapy profession. In addition to volunteering, my current placement at CAMH on the complex mental illness unit, has proven to be an integral part of my training and learning experience in the Recreational Therapy field. Working with the interprofessional team, providing therapeutic interventions to clients dealing with complex mental health illnesses, charting clients’ progress and behaviour, reaching out to community resources, developing therapeutic leisure programs, planning and executing them has prepared me for position as a Therapeutic Recreation. I am confident I can continue to provide inclusive interventions through your organization’s values and mission demonstrated by my strong interpersonal skills. In addition to adapting existing programs to be inclusive, the two programs I developed, and which have been adopted at CAMH to date are: Coping Skills with Button Making, and Reminisce (A Pop-Culture Intervention Program).

In my first placement at college, which took place at Fieldstone Commons Care (Long-term care facility), I have initiated and executed two programs which were: Let’s Get Physical (Fitness Program for Older Adults), and the iPod Project (Music Program for Older Adults with Dementia and Alzheimer’s). Both programs were inclusive and adaptable to all abilities.

Working within a therapeutic environment, I utilized my previous experience with understanding the importance of following confidential protocols that are sensitive in a hospital and long-term care setting. I bring extensive art and fitness backgrounds to the Recreation field. I have been practicing and exhibiting my own artwork since 1997, I have co-founded and co-directed an artist run gallery for 14 years, and I have been a fitness trainer for seven years; in addition to art and fitness, I also have extensive experience with graphic design and database management. Additionally, I also have had the incredible opportunity to volunteer abroad in Accra, Ghana, conditioning youth in a football club and working with children in an orphanage.

I am ready to be employed full-time beginning in May 2017. In January 2018, I plan to continue my education by taking the Therapeutic Recreation degree program offered from Brock University. This program takes place one weekend a month, which allows for full-time employment, while upgrading my education. Please note that I am flexible to work evening and weekend shifts.

Thank you for taking the time to review my recreation portfolio, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
